Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
