The tally of fatalities from the transport jet that ignited and went down has reached 13, according to recent reports.
Mayor's Announcement
While en route to the Workers’ memorial service, I was informed of a thirteenth victim that lost their life as a result of the UPS flight 2976 accident,” expressed the local official in a social media post. “My thoughts is with the relatives, friends and co-workers of all who were killed in this week’s disaster. We will overcome this collectively.”
Deceased Named
An announcement from UPS named the flight crew operating the jet as Pilot Richard Wartenberg, Co-pilot Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Dana Diamond.
“Our thoughts are extended to all UPSer who has been touched and all in our community area – assisting you and making sure you obtain the attention and assistance you need is our priority,” the firm’s statement expressed.
Probe Findings
Federal authorities revealed that the jet’s left wing burst into flames and an power plant fell off shortly after liftoff from the airfield, causing the plane to plummet and erupt into a blaze.
The NTSB announced it is examining the aircraft’s upkeep logs, which was in the state for maintenance several weeks prior to the accident.
Aircraft information showed the aircraft was on the runway in the Texas city from early September to mid-October.
“We are cognizant that this jet was present in the facility,” said an NTSB member on later, without a precise period. “We will review each aspect of service that was completed, even the Texas time, right up to the day of the trip.”
Recovery of Vital Items
The audio device and information unit were recovered, and the engine was found on the runway.
The units – known as data containers – were built to survive accident forces and severe fire from blazes, and they appeared to be undamaged when found among the remains. Investigators plan on reviewing data from the recorders.
Jet’s last recorded information displayed an elevation of that level and a speed of that speed prior to the impact.
Maintenance Record
Based on FAA records from 18 September, a crack on a component inside the fuel container needed fixes.
The company ST Engineering, which indicated it supplies airframe maintenance for the company’s aircraft and operates a maintenance center in San Antonio, refused to comment, but said it would work closely when officials approached it.
Services Continue
At the same time, UPS Worldport operations continued that evening with its overnight or evening operation, official a representative said. All three runways at the airport were also back in operation.
The UPS package handling facility in the city is the firm’s most significant. The center employs over a large number of individuals in the area, processes three hundred aircraft daily and sorts in excess of four hundred thousand packages an hour.
Local Reaction
A candlelight vigil was organized on the evening of that date by the regional worker’s group, which represents employees at the airfield, the firm’s biggest freight center.
Teamsters Local 89, which stands for UPS workers, commenced the memorial with a moment of silence at 5.14pm, the estimated time of the incident previously.
“This incident was so sudden, so unexpected,” the leader addressed the group of two hundred. “No one had a moment to say goodbye to each of those who we have mourned.”
