The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors at play, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
