The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the option to question specific calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
